Before you hire

Check the licence

Look up the licence number shown on the listing in the state registry. It should be current and match the business name.

Ask for proof of insurance

The licence and the insurance are two separate things. Ask the contractor for a current certificate of insurance before work starts.

Get the scope in writing

Ask for a written estimate that names the equipment, its size and what the job includes, so that two estimates can be compared line by line.

How this directory is built

The list is not a ranking and nobody pays to be on it. It is a readable copy of what the State of Texas publishes about its licensed air conditioning contractors.

  1. One source: the state registry

Licences come from the data set published by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on the Texas Open Data Portal. Nothing is added from review sites or from the contractors themselves.

  2. Current licences for home comfort work

A contractor is listed when the licence is not expired and carries the Environmental Air Conditioning endorsement or the Combined endorsement. Licences limited to commercial refrigeration are left out.

  3. Placed by the county on the licence

The registry gives a business county, not a street address. A listing appears under that county, which is where the business is declared and not a promise about its service area.

Common questions

Where does the list of contractors come from?

From the licensing data published by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on the Texas Open Data Portal. The directory keeps Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor licences that are not expired and that carry an Environmental Air Conditioning or Combined endorsement.

What is the difference between a Class A and a Class B licence?

A Class A licence allows work on equipment of any size. A Class B licence covers cooling systems of 25 tons and under and heating systems of 1.5 million BTU per hour and under.

Why is there no address or phone number on a listing?

The state registry gives a business county for each licence, not a street address or a phone number, and this directory does not add contact details from other sources.

Who answers when I call the number shown on this site?

An independent HVAC provider from a referral network. The number does not reach the contractors listed in the directory, and the publisher may be paid when a call is connected.

Do contractors pay to be listed?

No. Listings are built from public state records, without any request or payment from the contractors, and the contractors listed are not partners of this site.

How can I verify a licence?

Use the licence number shown on the listing in the TDLR licence search at tdlr.texas.gov. The state registry is the reference if it differs from this site.

How do I correct or remove a listing?

Write to us from the Contact page with the licence number. Listings are corrected or removed by hand. Changes to the licence itself are made with TDLR.
